Aquaponics

Aquaponics = Aquaculture + Hydroponics

When we were up visiting Jake's family for the family reunion and Granny's 80th birthday party, we took a tour of their (read Dale Merrick's) aquaponics set-up.

Once the fish are mature enough to begin harvesting, I'll be curious to hear how they prepare the tilapia. Maybe it's just me, but that fish always tastes a little bit muddy.

What we learned...

Aquaponics is a sustainable food production system that pairs aquaculture (raising aquatic animals) and hydroponics (growing plants in water). In this case, they are raising tilapia, using the fish waste - after it's been neutralized - to nourish crops, and channelling the purified water back to the fish.

They are one step closer to being off-the-grid completely. Impressive.
