The Great Downsize

It's a long, convoluted story and one I'm not inclined to blast to everyone online. Suffice it to say that the economy stinks and, due to a series of financial missteps, we are moving. Locally. Not to worry, all my Monterey Peninsula pals, we will still be here and your goodies from Cam's kitchen are secure! As long as I have a range and an oven, I will still be baking and cooking to my heart's content...and your stomach's delight.

Within a week, my get-it-done husband found and secured a spot for us. This weekend, we're enticing some friendly brawn with pizza and beer to move the big stuff. And for the next two weeks, we'll be on air mattresses while we completely pack 13 years of accumulation into a 2B/1.5BA townhouse.

The other night I said to Jake, "Do you remember when we first met?!? Everything I owned fit into one suitcase."

His smart-ass response: "Can you be that girl again? Please."

I'll give it my best shot. The Great Downsize has begun.

It's be an emotional roller-coaster for everyone, but I think the boys are looking at this as a new adventure. And they have finally realized the long-term goal. 'Long-term' is a tough concept when you're 7 and 9. Heck, it's a tough concept for me and I'm 38!

Initially, I wanted to move into a like-situation: 3 bedrooms, 2 baths, a large kitchen, lots of storage. I didn't want too much upheaval in our lives. Then I figured, it's better to spend less in rent, save more, and live with some space constrictions for awhile. We'll amass a down-payment on a new house quicker that way. Makes sense. Still it took a few days to really embrace that truth.

As always, I am grateful for the resilience and adventurous spirit that my boys display. It makes this all much, much easier.
