Reading Marathon

Some kids are bookworms, some aren't. I have one who definitely is, the other is definitely not. That's not to say that Dylan doesn't read, but it's not a passion.

I remember one of Riley's teachers telling us at a parent-teacher conference: "It worries me when he reads while walking in line. I think he's going to trip and hurt himself." Yes, reading is definitely not recommended while walking!

Through the Monterey Public Library, there is a summer reading program. The boys went down with the Nonni and pledged how many hours they would read. Riley, not surprisingly, has been diligently devouring pages while Dylan's attitude is less enthusiastic. But when he realized that the party is tonight and he won't get his prizes (free books, free frozen yogurt, and more), he was on a mission to accomplish his goal...in two days.

The upside: the kid was honest. He flat-out admitted, "I haven't been reading." The downside: we have had to endure hours and hours of Dr. Seuss to reach the goal. I never realized just how many pages are in some of those books. Great for new readers and cute illiteration, but - man, oh man! - those books are long, long, long, long, long.

When I dropped him off this morning, he had whittled down his time to one hour and ten minutes. "Piece of cake," he told me with a wave. "I'll read before summer camp and when I get home. Don't worry, Mommy."

I'm not worried about the reading party; I know he will reach his goal and get those free books and free yogurt. I just hope I'm not seeing his academic future. But, truly, I can see Dylan being a last-minute crammer. O dio! I know I did my fair share of that in college - I remember racing through five books the night before my British folklore final - but it would be nice for them not to make the same mistakes I did, right?
